Construction of a pedestrian/bike overpass near the intersection of Fish Hatchery and McKee roads is well under way, with completion slated for late August.
Work started on the $1.07 million overpass on April 20, with some lanes closed from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. during construction. The city is responsible for about 20 percent of the cost of the project.
The road will only be closed twice - once each night for a few hours between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. when each span of the bridge is set, according to project engineer Gus Vander Wegen. He said there would be a detour along Glacier Valley Road, but there is not expected to be much traffic at that time of night.
The project is funded by State Enhancement grants, Dane County, the Department of Natural Resources and Fitchburg.
VanderWegen said that Fitchburg picked up the extra cost over the $1 million projected, which was about $70,000. The city also bought two parcels of land for a total of $118,475.
